‘Glimpses of quality’ – Pundit discusses player’s recent introduction to West Brom XI

|

Former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips has praised Kamil Grosicki for the way he has taken his chance to impress since being given an opportunity in the Baggies starting XI over the course of this week.

Having joined West Brom from Hull back in the January transfer window, Grosicki finally made his first league start for Slaven Bilic’s side on Sunday against his former club, scoring in a 4-2 win over the Tigers.

The Pole then followed that up with another start in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over play-off hopefuls Derby, providing an assist for Grady Diangana to open the scoring, and Phillips does seem to be impressed by what he has seen from the attacking midfielder.

Has Kamil Grosicki done enough to keep his place in the starting lineup?

Yes

No

Speaking to West Brom News about the wait for a start that Grosicki has endured, and his performances since getting that chance, Phillips said: “I’m not really surprised [it took so long for Grosicki to be a starter] because Slaven had a settled side with Robinson, Diangana and Pereira.

“Obviously Diangana was injured and was out for a period but with Robinson, Pereira and Matt Phillips, it’s tough when you come into a side that are flying.

“As a player, you don’t expect to get much game-time because the team is winning games and you don’t really change it. When you get a chance in that side you take it and Grosicki certainly looked white-hot against Derby.

“He showed glimpses of quality, he got in down that left-hand side a lot of times.”

You feel that this can only be a good thing for West Brom.

The fact that Grosicki can step in and make contributions like he did against Hull and Derby after having to wait so long for his opportunity to start, just goes to highlight the strength in depth the Baggies currently have.

With a busy – and potentially nervous – end to the season coming up over the next few weeks, having that range of players to turn to should help Slaven Bilic overcome any selection issues he might encounter, and be key to helping the Baggies get over the line in the race for promotion to the Premier League.
