Carson sees red as Albion self destruct

Desperate Albion self destructed at The Hawthorns and missed their chance to consolidate their second place position in the Championship.

This scrappy game reached it’s nadir when Scott Carson seemed to head butt Michael Chopra and not only give away a penalty but get himself a straight red card as well. That’s a three game ban for the erratic captain who still flatters to deceive.

Whether the exertions of the Derby game on Saturday had taken their toll on this changed Albion side remains to be seen, but the home side certainly made hard work of matching a lively, disciplined Cardiff side. Some early spark from Graham Dorrans was quickly extinguished early on by a terrific piece of skill from Chris Burke whose low shot from the left side was enough to give Cardiff an early lead.

Although the forecast full-blooded battle hadn’t quite manifested itself in the early stages, Youssouf Mulumbu picked up an early injury and was replaced by the more mobile Filipe Teixeira. With this, Albion became a little more inventive but Cardiff still found it relatively easy to sit back and defend their one goal lead, hitting long balls up to Chopra and Chris Burke.

In midfield Gonzalo Jara was misplacing passes and generally reading the game in a completely different way to the front line; up front Roman Bednar became less and less effective as the game wore on.

It is ironic that Chris Wood was about to come for Albion before Carson and Chopra clashed in the Albion box.  Dean Kiely came on instead and, although he saved the initial penalty from Peter Whittingham, he couldn’t stop the midfielder slotting home the rebound.  A desperately frustrating evening for Albion and one that highlights the our lack of wide attacking options and continued problems at the back.
