Nicky Shorey has said that his spell on the sidelines recently helped to bring out the best of him as he returned against Bolton.

Speaking to wba.co.uk following the 2-1 victory Shorey admitted that being left out motivated him to get back to his best, and even Roy Hodgson described his performance yesterday as ‘very classy’.

‘I think the team did very well against Bolton and we put what we have worked on in training into practice, the second half was thoroughly enjoyable to play in. Sometimes you need a kick up the backside and gaffer has been urging me to get forward, so I was particularly happy with my performance today.’

Hodgson said of the left back.

‘I said to Nicky as I passed him after the game that class is permanent. He’s worked very hard since losing his place, I was pleased to see him back today.’
