Paul Scharner has said that our defensive display against Wolves was deserved owing to the effort put into training in the previous week by the players.
Speaking on wba.co.uk Scharner said that the new boss has made defensive duties his priorities since joining the club, and the whole team have been drilled on defensive organisation following our 3 goal surrender against West Ham.
‘The training was very hard last week. We did a lot of pressing and defensive stuff. To be honest it’s a bit of a success to concede just one goal.’
Scharner adds that Hodgson has pulled no punches in what he now requires from the team and although it’s still early days, the 1-1 draw with Wolves shows that the team is adapting.
‘You could see we have worked just one week under Hodgson and it needs time to get into the system. It’s very hard work what the gaffer needs from us, to stay in the holes and don’t let the ball through. It’s a lot of work.’
Scharner is however confident that we will avoid any ‘drop’ issues as he thinks we only need 4 wins from the remaining matches to maintain our Premiership position, and then of course next season, we work hard on actually moving the club forward.
‘We have 11 matches left and there are enough points to survive. We need four wins to stay up, four and a draw maybe.’
There are certainly enough points left with fixtures to secure ourselves, and hopefully end the season on a mini high.
We should be more than capable of getting Paul’s four wins and a draw from who we have yet to face. I’d fancy us fairly in the realms of 6 victories if we turn up and play and perform properly myself which should be more than enough to give Hodgson the summer he no doubt wants to improve us and make us a solid middle of the table team next season, and who knows from there…
